The site is on a west-facing block in Brighton and faces out to a large, grassed backyard. The backyard is the natural focal point of the family home and is heavily used by the three young children who live there. It was important that the new kitchen, living, and dining spaces maintain an outlook over the backyard, whilst also maximising natural light throughout the day. The L-shaped plan of this addition to a family home feeds northern light into both the kitchen and living areas [1].
The addition presents as a heavy, robust counterpart to the existing lightweight weatherboard cottage, fit for a family of today. It contrasts the lightweight floor and wall construction of the existing home with a polished concrete slab on the ground, thick brick walls and oversized, natural timber windows and doors [3]. The tongue-and-groove, painted, timber ceiling translates the external weatherboard cladding into a contemporary context and adds a subtle layer of detail to the simple and refined interiors.
