The design brings elements of the original building back into focus by realigning the plan and circulation within the home. External windows, hand-chiselled boulders of bluestone walls and a prominent Roman archway have been reappropriated to an internal setting [1]. This translation of exterior to interior allows the heritage fabric of the building to become the focal point of the home and characterize the kitchen, living and circulation spaces [2].

The material palette of bluestone, cement sheet, European Oak veneer, steel and plaster is refined and references those used in the original house. A layering of soft fabrics, art and books make up the contemporary addition that sits beside the orginal building [3], a deliberately quiet, recessive, and sympathetic approach that puts the focus back on the existing. The proposal differentiates itself from the original fabric by shifts in volume and access to sky and garden views.

[4] The cement sheet wall cladding references the original hall, stairwell, and landing walls which have a rare, greyish hard-plaster finish, with lines etched in to mimic stone rectangles
[5] Our clients wanted an environment where family members can remain living in this small footprint and once small-scale dwelling as their children get older. Physical separation, areas of privacy and areas of expansion and contraction allow this small footprint home to have a feeling of generosity
